CORPORACIÓN CULTURAL JAYEECHI

CORPORACIÓN CULTURAL JAYEECHI, is a non-governmental organization located in the Tourist and Cultural District of Riohacha, capital of the Department of La Guajira, Colombia.

For 30 years, Jayeechi has worked to promote cultural identity and lead community training processes in the performing and audiovisual arts. This has been done with the support of an interdisciplinary team of Wayuu and regional professionals.

Since introducing the play KAULAYAWA, Juego de la Cabrita (COLCULTURA grant) in 1993, Jayeechi has developed a variety of theatrical proposals that rely on the aesthetic language of ancestral indigenous symbols. Most of these works were created as a result of calls and grants from state agencies, the Ministry of Culture, and other national and international institutions.

Jayeechi was awarded the 2017 IBSEN SCHOLARSHIP by TEATER IBSEN from Norway, granted for the first time to a Colombian theatrical company. In 2017, the organization Alejandro Ángel Escobar conferred to Jayeechi its National Award: Honorable Mention, in the category Solidarity. In 2018, Simón Bolivar University also awarded the Simón Bolivar Award to Jayeechi for his almost three decades of artistic work.

Jayeechi has participated in several outstanding events, including the First Alternative Theater Festival, Bogotá, (Colombia) 1998; XI Festival “Don Quixote”, Paris (France), 2002; XI National Congress of Anthropology, University of Antioquia (Colombia), 2005; Itinerancias por Colombia, Ministry of Culture, Amazonas (Colombia), 2008; Book Fair Ecuador, 2010; University of Zulia, Maracaibo (Venezuela), 2013; Youth Theater Exhibition, Corporación Nuestra Gente, Medellín (Colombia), 2013; XVI Intergovernmental Committee Iberescena, Cartagena (Colombia), 2014; Festival of the Arts, Medellín (Colombia), 2014; Aranwa Raymi Festival (Ecuador), National Conference on Cultural Viva Comunitaria, (El Salvador); Universidad Intercultural Maya de Quintana Roo (Mexico), 2015. LUIS JIMÉNEZ, DIRECTOR FESTIVAL DON QUIXOTE, PARIS.

“Jayeechi is an incredible group doing culturally grounded work to support the continuation of Wayuu Culture within Colombia and beyond. As an Anishinaabe, Irish and Colombian woman, it was inspiring to witness the power of Jayeechi during their performances. They are leaders in the community for all ages and I look forward to our continued relationship”

NICOLE MANDRYK, ANISHINAABE ARTIST (CANADA)
