For almost 30 years, the JAYEECHI CULTURAL CORPORACIÓN has promoted community theatre processes based on Wayuu ancestry and interculturality in La Guajira. The organization was established in Riohacha, La Guajira, Colombia in 1993.

JAYEECHI began its cultural work from the headquarters of the Jayuir Foundation in Barrio Arriba (Calle 12 No 1C-91), with the support of Mr. Habib Rezvani (R.I.P.)

JAYEECHI worked in this sector (stigmatized by the sale of drugs) for 17 years, and helped to form new artists, offered access to theatrical languages, art exhibitions, playwriting and reading workshops, and other artistic training programs. It also held events including the recognition of older artists, research, and the preservation of the artistic expressions of the Wayuu indigenous culture.

JAYEECHI has led cultural initiatives with an emphasis on theatre and audiovisual arts, with the goal of contributing to integral education and social transformation. These initiatives have promoted collaborative work through collective creation processes, while also encouraging critical thinking that is reflected in the different productions.

The work is carried out mainly in vulnerable sectors of difficult access located in the upper, middle, and lower regions of La Guajira, through projects approved in the calls of the Ministry of Culture, national and international calls, and regional funds for culture.

HEADQUARTERS AND COMMUNITY CENTRE PROJECT

Since 2017, JAYEECHI has had a provisional headquarters located in the Cultural Centre, an entity under the administration of the La Guajira governor's office. However, the growing activities of JAYEECHI and its vision of having a multi-functional community space, have allowed it to acquire land in the Villa Fatima neighbourhood, from which it has been developing outdoor activities. Now, it intends to build a Community Centre for Training and Artistic Creation on this land.

The land measures 18 meters in front and 33 meters deep. The space currently has a room and four bleachers, which are used for free programming benefiting the low-income population and a large percentage of the Wayuu community, who ancestrally inhabit this sector bordering the indigenous reserves of El Pasito, Cangrejito and Pancho.

THIS HEADQUARTERS AND COMMUNITY CENTRE WILL OFFER:

* A cultural and artistic training space that includes a library and green area for agro-ecological practices.

* An auditorium for approximately 200 spectators, including dressing rooms, restrooms and storage rooms.

* Offices for the management and administration of JAYEECHI's programs; and

* A lodging area with kitchen

The centre's design is based on bio-construction techniques, and its purpose is to promote holistic principles of joint community work, permaculture, and agroecology. The centre aims to promote food sovereignty, the preservation of medicinal plants, and an active community culture.

The centre will host artistic expression workshops, scenic arts performances, film and documentary screenings. Furthermore, the centre will provide training in traditional weaving techniques, the Wayuunaiki language, traditional games, and how to grow food and recover green spaces using local vegetation.

The Community Centre's goal is to promote the scope of theatre as a strategy for community development in Villa Fatima through partnerships with individuals, organizations, and companies interested in contributing to the creation of spaces that depict Riohacha as a tourist and cultural district.
