¿TEATRÍZATE!

INTERCULTURAL AND LEARNING EXCHANGE

INTRODUCTION

The word TEATRÍZATE is an adaptation of the idiom used by street vendors in Riohacha, during the times when they offer fruits such as mamoncillos or plums. They tout in the streets expressions such as: ¡MAMONÍZATE! Or ¡CIRUELÍZATE!

TEATRÍZATE is a theatrical event that has been held since 2004, with the goal of highlighting the importance of the social and aesthetic function of theatre and art in general.

It promotes intercultural performances and exchanges aimed at reflecting on cultural identity, as well as encouraging training and cultural exhibitions. The program's activities take place in both open and alternative spaces and are aimed at all kinds of audiences.

This cultural gathering has positioned itself as the most representative theatrical event of La Guajira, credibility that has contributed to project the positive and entrepreneurial image of this region.

BACKGROUND

Jayeechi's artistic and capacity development work has focused on leading initiatives that encourage community theatre. This is done through the design, creation, and coordination of projects that build the capacity of trainers and community theatre leaders, and that facilitate the training of children and youth in the performing arts. The implementation of this work and its results takes place primarily in areas without cultural alternatives and for audiences who have not had the opportunity to see a play. The Teatrízate Festival is one of these initiatives.

The work techniques and creative processes of Jayeechi rely on the methodology of Collective Creation, which involves teamwork based on ethnographic processes and interdisciplinary research

One of the main sources of learning and inspiration of this organization has been the teachings of the master Santiago García (RIP) and of those who integrate the emblematic group of TEATRO LA CANDELARIA (Bogotá)

The different events have been possible through calls from the Ministry of Culture, private enterprise, and philanthropic contributions

Out of the ten (10) Teatrízate festivals carried out to date, the following versions stand out

¿TEATRÍZATE! 2022 – 10th INTERCULTURAL GATHERING OF KNOWLEDGE
AND COMMUNITY SCENIC PERFORMANCES

The 10th edition of Teatrízate, which was named Intercultural Gathering of Knowledge and Community Scenic Performances, was held from November 12th to 19th in the department of La Guajira. This event occurred in conjunction with the national celebration of the Cultural Outburst proposed by the Ministry of Culture.

The TEATRÍZATE 2022 project showcased artistic and pedagogical efforts that encourage the development of local creativity and contribute to generate dialogue among representatives of ancestral and symbolic knowledge, cultural expressions, and artistic languages using the performing arts.

Exceptionally, it included the participation of a collective of Canadian indigenous artists and researchers affiliated to the University of Victoria. Among them were Tracey Murphy, a social sciences' researcher, and Nicole Mandryk and Margaret August, who are also researchers and indigenous artists from the Anishinaabe and Coast Salish First Nations. Through workshops, presentations, and gatherings with Wayuu indigenous youth and children, their performances and art were shared.

This celebration included a tribute to the director of Jayeechi, Enrique Berbeo García, for his more than three decades of service to the performing arts in La Guajira. The event also included a cultural alliance with the University of La Guajira and its Villanueva, Fonseca and Maicao campuses, as well as the House of Culture of Villanueva.

¿TEATRÍZATE! – 2016. 9th Version of Teatrízate - Intercultural Community Meeting

During the 9th Version of Teatrízate Intercultural Community Meeting (invited country: El Salvador), we made visible the advantages of community theatre in Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, and El Salvador.

Furthermore, this event enabled us to share expressions that are present in the Community Living Culture.

¿TEATRÍZATE! – 2013. JAYEECHI 20 YEARS

The 6th version of Teatrízate (Jayeechi 20 Years) included the celebration of the 20 years of trajectory of this organization, with the participation of theater groups from La Guajira, Colombia, and Venezuela.

During this event, awards were presented to: BEATRIZ CAMARGO (Itinerante del Sol, Villa de Leyva, Boyacá); PATRICIA ARIZA (Corporación Colombiana de Teatro), SANTIAGO GARCÍA (Teatro La Candelaria) and MARIO MATALLANA (Teatro Taller de Colombia) from Bogotá.
